Rising Gas Prices in Florida: A Burden for Motorists and Small Businesses
Over the course of a single week, gas prices in the state of Florida have skyrocketed by a staggering 10 cents per gallon, causing a significant burden for both motorists and small businesses, according to AAA. This abrupt surge in prices compounds the challenges faced by small businesses already grappling with decreased business due to inflation.
At present, the average price for a gallon of gas in Florida hovers around $3.46, a figure that is unsettling for many. What makes matters worse is that this increase has occurred even before the official commencement of the summer season, when fuel demand typically peaks.
Conard Hendrickson, a former roofer who now works for Evergreen Lawncare of Brevard LLC, is one of many feeling the impact of rising gas prices. Hendrickson’s work involves operating a range of equipment that runs on gas, including lawnmowers, weed-eaters, edgers, blowers, and their work truck. He lamented the fact that his crew alone now spends $100 a day on fuel for their 15 routes, a substantial increase from the $70 they used to spend before inflation hit.
Jenn Vila, the owner of Evergreen Lawncare of Brevard LLC, shed light on the broader implications of escalating fuel prices. Vila revealed that her company is currently experiencing a 20-25% decline in business due to the mounting costs. She emphasized that the primary driver behind the increase in expenses is the surging fuel prices. Vila also explained the predicament faced by small business owners like herself, who are unable to instantly raise prices to compensate for these sudden cost hikes. As a result, they are left with no choice but to absorb the additional expenses.
In addition to grappling with soaring fuel prices, small businesses also have to contend with other financial obligations such as payroll and insurance. The cumulative impact of these rising costs can place immense strain on their profitability and long-term sustainability.
As gas prices continue to climb, motorists and small businesses across Florida find themselves in an increasingly precarious position. The burden of high fuel costs not only affects the daily lives of individuals but also hampers the growth and viability of small enterprises. Finding sustainable solutions and alternative measures to mitigate the impact of these escalating prices becomes a pressing concern for both the government and affected stakeholders.
